Bad Science In The 19th Century

April 22, 1864:

“An effort is being made to have an artesian well sunk in Market Square. The river water is unfit for use–even a filter or ice cannot make it safe for cooking or drinking.”

And 150 years later it still isn’t safe.

1864 Child: Mom! There’s squiggly things in my water!

1864 Mom: Don’t worry honey—here, I’ll put some ice in your glass and that will kill the squiggles.

No wonder people died young—if the war didn’t kill you, the squiggles would!
