Throwing Down The Gauntlet

Yesterday Bobby Schilling formally challenged Phil Hare to a series of four debates to be held in the QCs, Macomb, Galesburg and Quincy.

Aside from these debates, which Hare has not yet agreed to, today Schilling announced he is holding a separate series of townhalls which will be open to the public throughout the district because:

“I want to share my vision with the people of the 17th District . . . At the same time, I want to hear their concerns.”

This is in direct contrast to Hare, who prefers safe venues like telephone “townhalls”, his press pals, union paymasters and people to whom he plays Santa Claus by doling out our taxpayer money to win votes.

But when he is in safe company, like Progress Illinois which is owned and operated by Big Labor SEIU, Hare is free to crow that the massively unpopular Obamacare is a “huge accomplishment” and the most important achievement of his second term.

He wouldn’t DARE say that out in public in the 17th CD.

But I thought Bobby Schilling didn’t want to talk about the issues? I guess from the release that he has already sent out dozens of releases focusing on the issues.

I think that was a team set up from the Hare campaign and Brandy, who is openly re(pro)gressive.

Maybe Hare will be too busy reading 3000 page bills three times. Maybe he’ll be studying the thumping of some ones heart in an emergency room that just saved their child’s life and don’t want to pay the bill. He doesn’t claim to be an expert just a “Dreamer”. So I wonder if he’ll be confident enough to debate Schilling. Unless it is in his IEBW hall with the protection of his anti Schilling thugs.

The Progress Illinois link was so juicy it could have been a stand-alone post, including this hint on how Hare plans to “campaign”:

“[Hare] called on Democrats to change their message by promoting the stories of ordinary people whose lives have been devastated by the economic recession.”

It makes absolutely NO sense for Dems to tell stories about “ordinary people” whose lives have gotten WORSE since the Dems took control of Congress and especially since Obama got in the WH.

How does he think it will benefit the Dems to campaign on this question: Are you better off now than you were two years ago?

Does he really think in this job-destroying economy that people will be swayed by sob stories about people they don’t even know when they are worried to distraction about what will happen—and what IS happening to THEM and their family? The expiration date on the “Let Me Tell You A Story” era has passed; we are now looking for SOLUTIONS, not anecdotes.

Hare’s political adviser should join the ranks of the unemployed for idiocy like this!

You’re right. Phil Hare DOES look like Santa.

I just do not see Hare offering to risk open debate. He has the money coffers and big labor purse strings to avoid a face-to-face confrontation. He is more likely to use those funds to play sniper tactics with issues while hiding behind media bunkers for protection. The only reason for him to debate would be a complete desperation move or his head/good sense becomes over-swollen from his gigantic ego, even then he would use his media connections to create an uneven playing field.

S,but how will Hare get out of it?

Evans said he was “too busy” to debate Zinga when we all knew he was too sick, but how will Hare justify avoiding debates?

When Evans was “too busy” to do debates Hare took his place, so will he demand his office manager take his place at the podium?

    Why wouldn’t Hare debate Schilling?

Too busy spending the taxpayer’s money before the GOP takes control of Congress and puts the kabosh on the Obama/Pelosi/Hare leftwing agenda?

Has to take his dog to Mayo’s for cancer treatment?

Taking remedial lessons about what is in the Constitution?

Getting tutoring from the VA about what is legally required in order to be considered a veteran?

    What?

Why would Hare debate his opponent and give him publicity? Nobody would tune in to see Bobby, but his cult. Real people know who and what Phil is all a bout. Once they grasp what Bobby stands for they will run for the hills. Nobody wants women arrested for buying birth control, and nobody wants America to stay in the WAR. Nor do they want Bobby turning the White House into a Pizza Shop. We have enough people in Washington playing with our dough, we don’t need an ameture, no expereined politican like Schiling!

“We have enough people in Washington playing with our dough” is the best case I’ve heard for electing Schilling.

Oh yeah, Hare voted FOR war funding in ’09 (maybe in ’10). And we all want the WH to be turned into a union shop.

In ’06 when Evans sealed the dirty backroom deal that elevated Hare to congressman, Hare was a “ameture” too—but I know you backed him because—well, because Lane wanted him.

    Phil Hare’s new campaign slogan:

Phil Hare: Not the choice of the people, but the choice of powerful elites and a powerful sick man.

Works for me—what’s not to like?

PS: Red show me where Schilling wants “women arrested for buying birth control” or go to Spam Hell—ooops! I forgot–you’re already in Spam Hell!

(S,but how will Hare get out of it?)

He is the incumbent and the reality is that works to his advantage. As your other post displayed, he can make up phony campaign advertisements that we taxpayers foot the bill for and then pawn them off as part of his job. He has the support of the media to protect his a$$ets. He has more money, Big Labor and the Democrat machine to power his campaign. All he has to do is use his money and the media to counterpunch his opponents moves. In the end as the challenger it is up to Schilling to find a way to take the fight to Hareball. And from what I have seen of Hare his campaign people would be foolish to allow him to take part in a public debate. Hare is the classic example of open mouth insert foot. Every time he opens his mouth in open discussion he creates a bad case of foot in mouth disease for his campaign as well as the local Politburo. That does not even take into account that Hare looks and acts the part of a thuggish mob boss. If I were the Hare campaign, I would put a muzzle on him – except for all events where I had complete control of his crowd, questions and questioners. If I were Schilling I would be looking for a way to goad Hare into public exchanges where it might be possible to force the Hare campaigns hand in a public debate. Public debate is risky for Hare as he does not come across well. And in truth the only reason Hare would have to debate is if Schilling finds a way to force the hands that pull Hare’s strings as well as protect him from real competition inside the party.

S, I thought this quote by Hare’s flack/political director Maggie Depoorter was interesting:

“In due time, [Hare] will respond with a proposal of his own that ensures that the voters of this Congressional district are fully informed about the candidates and their positions.”

    Which leads me to conclude:

    1. “Due time” will be on or after November 2

    2. Hare will propose the debates be held at union halls in RICO

    3. Hare will demand “reporters” from the Hare-Dispatch and WQAD moderate

So it looks like we can expect Hare to do some major league political game-playing here—for the reasons you set out.
