Quote Of The Day

From a New York Times editorial:

There are several kinds of Washington memoirs: “I Reveal the Honest Truth,” a kiss-up-and-tell designed to settle scores (nod to honesty optional). “I Was There at the Start,” designed to make the author appear to be the linchpin of history. And, most tedious: “I Knew It Was a Terrible Mistake, but I Didn’t Mention It Until I Got a Book Contract.”

  1. What a joke this book seems - he claims some kind of conspiracy on the Valarie Wilson CIA leak. However, it has long been fact that Dick Armitage conveyed this information to Novak.

Does not every President ’sell’ his efforts to the public, whether it be an economic policy, or a war? There is a long list of Dem’s that made WMD-admissions in 2001 & 2002. President Clinton and his Sec. of State made many WMD comments about Iraq in 1998, 1999 and 2000 - yet when Bush makes the same claims, he is the only one lying?!

McClelland sold out the truth for a fat check. Big deal.

  2. The fact that another moonbat eruption at Obama’s church has knocked this story off the top indicates how far Bush has fallen off the national radar screen.

I look for a whole slew of these kiss & tell, CYA, “if only they had listened to me” type books to flood the market before their “sell by” date expires—sometime between November 4th and January 20th.

I haven’t read the book (and don’t plan to) but from what I have read in the press (not exactly reliable, either), it seems you are correct that the book is a rehash of old news and false information.

What I HAVEN’T seen is comparisons with George Stephanopoulos’s kiss and tell book about Clinton, which was published in 1999. Here’s a review in the left-wing Salon published in ‘99 that exactly matches what is being said about McClellan’s book.

But inspite of scathing reviews from the left, George made out OK afterwards with a juicy job at ABCNews.

  3. Clinton may have lied about WMD, too, but he didn’t use it as the basis of a war that killed tens of thousands of people.

And the reason the Plame thing matters is that it appears that a low-level grunt may have taken the fall for the two most powerful people in the land (Cheney, and McClellan’s book even asserts GWB himself approved the outing of Plame).

Even if none of it is true, you at least have to understand why the left is going nuts over it. The right went just as nuts over far, far less important allegations with Bubba Clinton.

  4. pioneer98,
    1. NO ONE lied about WMD’s - Sadam just played one over on the entire international community for over 10-years.
    2. Libby did not take the fall for anyone - it is a known fact, admited by the principals, that Armitage outed her, and
    3. What ‘far less important allegations with Bubba Clinton’ could there be? These are not even real allegations!

  5. McClellen didn’t sell out the TRUTH, as Tiger says. He sold out Bush. I don’t like Bush. I don’t like McClellen. They deserve each other.

  6. How will any future administration be able to work if the POTUS is afraid that everyone at his meetings are taking notes in order to publish a blockbuster book denouncing him and calling him out as a liar/hypocrite?

For a POTUS, if you can’t trust your closest advisers to give you the unvarnished truth for fear they will write a kiss & tell book about you—who do you trust?

This isn’t just bad for Bush anymore than Stephanopoulos’ book was bad for Clinton—this is bad for honest dialogue between POTUS and advisors.

  7. There only truth about anyones life including Bush, is that there is nothing exact. The whole WMD crusade is a great example. This country has assumed Iraq had nasty bombs since we left the MidEast after Bush Sr. packed up and went home. Clinton assumed he has them. This country and its politicians assumed we had them all throughout the 90’s. Hell the world though he had them they just could not prove it and Saddam was doing his best to run inteference to make sure that no one could ever know for sure, and he was doing a damn good job of pass blocking. Our information said he had them, granted it was information coming from an intelligence agency that Clinton had gutted finances from. The information was nasty enough that Clinton was being pressured within his own party publicly to do something about Saddam. Clinton actually did attack Iraq unsanctioned by the UN several times. Due to the GB1 assasination attempt, in 93 Clinton launched Tomahawks into several locations killing several including a few civilians. Several times in ‘98 he attacked Iraq including a four day bombing campaign. Plus he led the harsh economic sanctions the world eventually placed on Iraq. According to UNICEF those sanctions were responsible for the death of roughly 500,000 Iraqi children. So the “evidence”, there is no truth ind you, is that we have been at war with Iraq since long before GW Bush entered the picture. Bush2 and the D&R Congress/Senate just finally sent troops inside the country to work on a twenty year old mess.

  10. Nice post scoundrel. Might I add to “twently year old mess”, with

And to help stabalize the Middle East with addidtional democracy-fueled governments.

The fact is that the only means to really fight terrorism is the spread of Democracy. As ‘the people’ feel as though they have a degree of power and rights within their own country, they will not feel the hatred towards those that have the freedom that every living soul desires.

  11. Scoundrel, I’m thinking the problem with your comment getting hung up in moderation is that now (or maybe always) WordPress/Akismet reads anything with an open (or naked) URL as spam.

A few days ago Robbie had a comment hung up in moderation/spam (can’t remember which now) and his comment also had an open URL.

Think about all the spam you have received/deleted (are you in the millions yet? :-D )—they all had open URLS.

This is just my theory— you know what technogenius I am! :-D

  12. I am pushing close to 19,000 spam posts since my grand opening. I cleaned out the box late last night about the time I posted my little spam rant and my dashboard says I currently have 40 waiting for deletion. Most are probably from the same individuals as I have been receiving a plethora of spam with links to online poker and gambling sites. You would think that would violate some gambling law or something. ;-)

  13. Guess I spoke to soon. When I posted yesterday that I was approaching 19,000 spam hits, I was still 27 hits away from 19,000. Sometime between then and his moment 7:19 a.m. I was pushed way over the top! In less than 24 hours I am now setting at 19,269 spam hits. Actually only 71 were were left in my personal bin as Akismet automatically deleted most of them. I am no technogeek either but you have to wonder how they even make it to Akismet as I noticed the maany of the spams that were left behind had the same exact IP number. You would think that they would simply ban the IP numbers.
