Amtrak has been a losing business venture for a longtime. How long are taxpayers going to foot the bill? If Walmart is not profitable should we fund a bill to pay them? How about Boeing? Tell your congressmen that you are tired of paying for pet projects. If they are not your voice in Washington than who is?

I think we need to start looking away from career politicians such as Phil Hare( 20 + years working for Lane Evans). I do not always agree with the Republicans either but I have served in Iraq and realize we should be there and not just cut and run. Rep Moffitt is an honorable man. I do not think he has the desire to deal with the cut throat politics of Washington. Maybe it is time for Western Illinois to get a fresh face in politics. Haven't we had enough factories close and businesses move on? How may farmers have had to go bankrupt while we have had the same leadership in Congress?

sorry for the double comment, but this is why i loved my former state rep. who was a republican!!!

an article in the R-M today was about amtrak funding http://www.register-mail.com/stories/110107/MAI_BEQ2SFRE.GID.shtml

here is the quote: "I think it's a very good step," said state Rep. Don Moffitt, R-Gilson. "It's my understanding that President Bush is opposed to the bill. But I'll flat-out say I think President Bush is wrong on this."

this isn't even great because i hate bush! but i love that he will call out his leadership on an issue he disagrees with. i have always felt that moffitt was a great rep. and hes always been pretty against moving up the political ladder. but if he ever does, i would support him.

well and its not even pork all the time. often the party in power will attach some kind of issue that they might not be able to pass straight up, but know that the main part of the bill is important enough that the minority has to vote for it or risk looking bad in the press.

Pork the other white meat especially favored by legislators for its exquisite and gourmet texture. Good luck getting them to give up on that meal.

I'm with you on this Robbie---it's just plain ridiculous that congress can't present a funding bill without all the pork attached.

Unfortunately, both parties in congress love their pork and the political points they can score by saying "Republicans Hate Children" or "Democrats are Soft on Terrorism."

The entire system is broken----our elected officials don't give a damn about us---until it's time to vote.

how would you feel about restrictions that forced congress to not tack all this shit onto bills? i have no idea how it could work, but it always seems stupid that they try to lump shit into bills that has nothing to do with it. i know the reasoning is to try and sneak shit through and make it look as if the other party is voting against the whole thing, but its ridiculous!
