The Paul Tsongas Memorial Pander Bear Award 9/30/07

As I’m sure you know, finding a worthy recipient for this august award was a tough call—especially in the heat of a POTUS battle by both parties, but I do believe I have found a worthy person:

Hillary Clinton and her “give every newborn $5,000 from the government program.”

What’s not to like, after all, it’s for the freakin’ children? However, I do have my doubts that this freebie will “help Americans get back to the tradition of savings” as Hillary claims. That makes no sense—”Americans” won’t be saving, the government will be forcing “Americans” to save. Kinda like those personal Social Security accounts that don’t exist.

And let’s get real here, do we really need a new entitlement when we are facing a crises in funding Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid?

And isn’t paying people to have kids the same as the old welfare state, which Hillary’s wonderful husband said was over? I guess not, if it can buy her a few votes—-with other people’s money.

And what about the immigration crises? Illegals are already sucking social services dry, this will only encourage illegals to have even more kids to take advantage of the dumb gringos—-sounds like a plan—for illegals.

The money quote comes at the end of the article: “The New York Senator did not offer any estimate of the total cost of such a program or how she would pay for it. Approximately 4 million babies are born each year in the United States.” You do the math.

I guess the upside is that fewer women will be having abortions, since they would have a financial incentive to keep their babies.

Hillary Clinton: The Pander Bear salutes you!

UPDATE 10/1/07: Voters turn against Pander Bears, according to a recent Rasmussen survey. By a margin of 2 to 1 (60% against; 27% for) likely voters rejected Hillary’s $5000 baby bond entitlement scheme.

  1. When will Democrats (and Republicans for that matter) learn that giving someone something for nothing has never worked. It builds dependancy, but does not build responsible citizens. And it certainly does not end poverty - or even put a dent into it.

Since the liberals started these great programs in the 60’s, we have given TRILLIONS to end poverty, and guess what…POVERTY HAS ONLY INCREASED.

We need sound economic policy that will help business create jobs and we need sound social policy that will help individuals accept responsibility for being a productive member of society and a good parent.

We do not need to throw more money at a problem, when money has never done anything other than INCREASE the problem in the first place.

And we need Republicans who will have the conviction and integrity to stand up against these ongoing give-away programs. Sorry to say…fat chance on all counts.

  2. Paul Tsongas was a great man who did more for this country than any QC area blogger. He does not deserve to be denegrated in this way, especially as he is dead.

  3. Josh, check out my update—voters rejected this Pander Bear move by Hillary by a 2 to 1 margin—-even Democrats rejected this entitlement scheme!

Could be people are finally getting smart and recognizing that “free” ain’t free—at least one would hope.

  4. schqc, we don’t agree on much, but we do agree on this: Paul Tsongas was a great man.

Obviously, I didn’t share his politics or ideology, but he was an honest politician who told the truth as he saw it, and stood by and up for his principles. I admired him for that then, as I do now. We need MORE politicians like Paul Tsongas, not less.

If you recall, one of Tsongas’ first, if not his very first Pander Bear Award was given to Mrs. Clinton’s husband. It was well deserved.

How am I dishonoring Paul Tsongas? That is most definitely not my intention.

  5. QCE, I am affraid that you may be a little too optimistic. Voters and the public have never realized that ‘free’ is not free and as long as the politicians and the far left spin it the right way, far too few are smart enough to try to understand.

    Thankfully, there are small victories…
